When I were a lad the term Homo was a generic mild insult very similar to the use of gay today.
It had no specific homophobic connotations, despite its obvious roots, by that I mean that when I was 6 or 7 my peers and I had no real concept of any sexuality let alone homosexuality so couldn't deliberately use it in that way.
As we got older Homo was still used pretty generically although the terms queer, poof or pooftah were used to indicate homosexual. Strangely the words queer, poof and pooftah were also used by homosexuals to describe themselves and weren't considered insulting, obviously when screamed in the face by a DM wearing skinhead they did take on some degree of insult.
Obviously times have changed and now even using a grammatically correct and accurate word to describe someone can be considered insulting by some... Oh Well
