I thought they said it might not be Higgs, but some entirely new branch of physics which happens to act just like Higgs.
Now, in practice that's not an uncommon way for physics to progress, but on the other hand we tend to prefer the simplest explanation which fits the observed facts.

I can see where they're coming from, although expressed like that it sounds like claiming William Shakespeare didn't write his plays but the author was someone else called William Shakespeare.
