seem to remember watching scenes of fans climbing in windows at the old Wembley in 1986 and the newspapers and TV stations making light of it.. ahhh the cheeky scamps without tickets getting in there..

"The 1986 FA Cup Final" by Dave Usher - Magic Moments - Articles - Articles - Home

I can remember watching in amazement that year as fans risked life and limb climbing up the walls of Wembley and used their scarfs to swing across to the opening where their mates were waiting to catch them.

so glad we have seat only stadiums now.
I go to football matches which are all standing (except for international where FIFA and UEFA state that they must be seated) and there has never been any problems.

In addition to well-designed conventional terraces other forms of accommodation for standing spectators have been developed outside of the UK, which can also be considered options for the creation of safe standing areas. One country that has developed such alternative forms of standing accommodation is Germany. All German Bundesliga grounds permit standing and many have very large standing areas. Until as recently as 2004, for instance, top-flight German club Borussia Mönchengladbach's home stadium, the Bökelbergstadion, provided standing accommodation for over 25,000 fans and seats for under 9,000. Today, Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park (aka the Westfalenstadion) provides standing accommodation for 27,000 fans.

The standing accommodation at many German grounds is in the form of conventional terraces. The alternative forms of accommodation have been developed for those grounds at which not only domestic games are played, but also games under the jurisdiction of the sport’s European and/or world governing bodies, i.e. UEFA and FIFA respectively. Since the summer of 1998, UEFA has specified that all games in its competitions (at that time the Champions League and UEFA Cup, now the Europa League) must be played in all-seater stadia. In order to continue to accommodate standing fans at domestic matches and yet be able to convert their stadia into all-seater facilities for UEFA games, the German clubs developed a range of solutions. Some clubs use more than one option.

          As SE says, its different.

I remember UK football violence on the news every week, its a rarity now, part of that improvement was due to all seater stadiums.

Maybe I missed the swarms of German fans getting ready for a ruck every week in the 80s?

So in summary, idiot football fans pushing caused the death of other football fans, police compounded the issue by opening the gates which more than likely resulted in a larger number of fans being crushed by a larger crowd but there would have more than likely been deaths outside anyway had they not opened the gates.

Glad that's taken 20 years and god knows how many millions to get to the bottom of!

I'm not sure we can just dismiss the fans as idiots, it may well have been very scary throughout.

but the inevitability of it is so true sadly.

Crowds of people always push whether it's getting into clubs, pubs, concerts or sports events. So I wouldn't call the football fans idiots. As far as the fans were concerned there was room in the stadium for them to stand as no-one had told them otherwise.

It needed the management to employ more people on the door plus the police to firmly keep control of the crowd.

                      why ??

The cops opened the gates because of the crush being caused outside, in their misguided thought that it would stop the crush and people getting seriously hurt/dying
