Ah, but this has no headphone socket and the stupid air pods are around £120.
If you went for top end iphone 7 and the required wireless head phones, it rings in at over £1K
Actually to be fair to Apple they come with a set of wired headphones that use the lightening connector and a lightening to 3.5mm jack adaptor cable. So you are not totally screwed unless you want to listen to music on your phone while charging it.

That's good then, only an additional adaptor to carry around
Maybe, to get around that they could add a jack to the phone

I had hoped that Wireless charging would be launched with the loss of the jack as a compensation, however using the free Wireless charging that was offered in the Virgin East Coast lounge last night it was dire in speed

Yes Apple are expensive compared to the budget Android, the entry price for the Note 7 is £699 (64gb), the 7 plus is £719 (32gb), not really the premium that people make out.
My 1+3 was £300. 128Gb storage, 6Gb RAM, yada yada.
People critisie Apple for "inventing" stuff they didn't (I'll admit that one, they claim to do a lot more things than they have done in reality), Lenovo dropped the 3.5mm jack first and a couple of others have too, how long do you think it will be before other manufactures, maybe who were reluctant to draw the backlash that Apple knows it can handle, start to do the same too?
What Apple do is hone and perfect certain technologies, contactless was not a major thing until ApplePay launched, same thing with wearables, they didn't get much traction until the AppleWatch, and make decisions to drop older technologies they feel do not sit with their premium product experience.
Hoot Hoot..........
Just phoned the signalman.
What's that really loud noise, Fat Controller?
Don't worry son, that'll be the Fanboi Express pulling in
