I do have a problem with this thought that we are short of skilled workers though. We are short of skilled workers that will do it super cheap yes but I can't help feeling we have plenty of skilled workers if you want to pay market rates.

Yup, two problems there; firstly, despite a huge glut of business and related graduates, management still swallows too much of the budget to pay techies properly, but that's s-l-o-w-l-y changing here in NL. Secondly, there is a shortage in the 'hard' tech. No shortage of people who can make or set up administrative software or silly little mobile apps, but in engineering and in industrial automation there's a real gap. I'd rather the Indians, Russians, Chinese who have those skills come here than that the Dutch high-tech industry closes down and goes there.

I think a large part of the cause of this shortage is actully the first problem; this cult of 'management' that swallowed so many young brains for so long when they could have been learning something useful. Around Eindhoven, people with overalls and mucky hands are at last getting close to the salaries of the besuited twats who have no skills and sit around bleating about strategic synergies and KPIs and pretending their job requires skills. It'll happen in India too though.

Indeed... where do we switch from supplementing our skilled workforce from overseas to having them fully replaced so we are unable to get any of our own grads trained up and skilled? It is a very dangerous and fine line IMO. I for one would not let my kids do IT as a career path now, but am sure many other industries are suffering.

It's a hard nut to crack. Some industrial companies are investing in training young people, but they still have to compete with schools offering useless qualifications like 'Personal Shopper' and 'Public Relations Adviser'.

Also I think the 50k funds requirement is for those switching from Post Study Work visa (my missus had one of those!) - for anyone else it's £200k....
