Why are some people so blinkered and so single minded, like that other tard and agents being an overhead? There is flexibility in every situation. You can't say awhole employment model is useless and won't give you some benefit. That is just dumb and short sighted.

I mean, most of us work along side the permies, same technology, same projects etc. Why would only contractors get benefit from that? The permies get nothing? Ridiculous. I have worked with many permies that have had training, promotion, role change etc based on career preferrences. I have seen very few contractors do the same.

If a role comes up that is in a skillset you would like then it is entirely feasible you can get skills from a perm job and some in some (I would argue alot) of cases it is very difficult to get into new skills being a contractor unless you fall lucky on a gig. I have absolutely no chance of getting SAP skills as a contractor, to be fair not that much chance of getting a permie one either but still damn site better than a contractor.

Contracting isn't the be all and end all and pemie the worst thing ever. They have pro's and con's and the intelligent person will use these to his/her advantage. To write one off with absolutely no basis just makes you look like a moron.

Well, I've been a bit too choosey and must admit, kind of regretting it a little. But, in this game you always think there's something better just around the corner (even if you turn something down for a valid reason or the budget gets pulled from under you!).

I've toyed with considering permie but, I really wonder how easy \ hard it would be to convince permies you want the job and its not just a stop gap til the market picks up.

Keep looking, keep trying and cast the net a tad wider every week. One of my ex colleagues is now working at the other end of the country and effectively get about 20 hours at home at the weekend before having to set off back to his digs.

I briefly considered it simply because I want to be home every night.

But a contract called and grabbed me before I interviewed for the job. I might still look at permie at the end of this contract.

Am almost certainly goin permie. Have three applications on the go and expect to be offered two or all of them.

I am looking to move public to private sectors and job function and possibly industry. Can't do that as a contractor. Looks like I should get a good enough package.

Just accepted a perm role...shall I delete my account now?

                Reasons
                • Much bigger role and responsibility, good package (great for Scotland) - maybe not contractor money (although probably the equiv of £400 per day).
                • Needed a bigger challenge than just doing Solution Architecture in finance
                • Sick of wondering - how the hell did so-&-so get to be in that position - then realised they got there by grabbing opportunities*such as this
                • I know the people I'll be working with and for and they're great - that's worth £200 per day in my eyes
                • The wife will finally be able to workout how I get paid

If after 18 months it doesn't work out, worst case is that I drop back into current role @ £500-600 per day, more likely I take a more senior role at a higher rate.

This is a case of pushing myself into a bigger and badder role, I'm actually bricking it!

Intersting answers. Going perm does seem to be a viable option when done for the right reasons. So for myself being really interested in Investment Banking, its the most viable way to do it...

I am sniffing around a first time bank role, permie. If I take it, it will be a low paying contract in my eyes for about 6 to 12 months, than back to contracting. Sometimes it is worth sacrificing rates, whatever it takes (almost) to get what you want. I wan to be closer to where they create money.
My mind has gone blank. I wonder if it was always that way.

Must admit, Im surprised places are taking on contractors moving into permie. Usually, you'll get knocked back by the agent because they \ the client thinks you're going to jump ship as soon as the market improves.
