Obviously at interview you need to prepare very good reasons/answer to this question, including career progression, being part of a close team, the extra curricular activities (which you need to spin to make it related to the work lol)

But the actual reason I took permie now, mainly I wanted to get specific experience in a new direction that I wasn't able to jump to in the contracting market nowadays, years ago perhaps I could have made the jump with a client I worked with before, but the market is not great for trying to get a contract out of your own experience.

Also I have a few personal things I need to sort out this year, so a permie role suits me better as I can take days off when need it.

I could afford to live on the salary they offered me for a year or so, hence I thought its not a big risk, like someone else here said, I consider it a low paid contract for a year, and getting the experience/training I need. If after the first year or so I am unhappy with the work, then I will give my notice, if I am happy then who knows !

At the end of the day an new role whether a contract or permie is a risk, one needs to weigh their options.

Solution Architect, background consultancy, finance and now contracting in finance.

Do I see this as a temporary step? I see all roles as temporary, I've did work in one place for 7 years which was quite long enough. Perm or contract, I work the same and have the same mentality. I can't just sit on my hands and bill, I really try and improve what's there be it IT or process. Just my personality, never been the grey man.

Would I go back into contracting - in a heart beat but I fancy something more challenging, not just for future earnings but to keep me interested. I spend more time at work than anywhere else, so it may as well be interesting.

Market is not good at the moment and I am dreaming of permi days but hand on hart I like it better contracting. No office politics no bull. As for learning, I learnt more in one contractor position than I have learnt in a year of being pemi. Its simple, permanent positions mostly have a way of doing things. You do it that way and if you want to change something you have to jump through the hoops and convince bosses that new technologies are not there just to annoy people.

Anyway, what do I know, I am new in all of this and just wondering ... Why is market sooooo slow at the moment and when will pick up. Is it time of the year? Is it recession? What is it?

The market is dependant upon your skills and experience. I've got a glut of SA positions within Edinburgh to pick from. If you know CADIS then you're looking at rates of up to £1000 per day with loads of places desperate to take you on... .Net is still good, BA roles there's lots... There's no "market" as such.

Well said +1! , I also think it depends on your CV, These questions will guide you..

is your CV readable in 4 Seconds?
Do you have your Key skills "Looking" at the readers face at first glance?
Do you have ALL the key words in your CV agencies are looking for?
Do you have just one generic CV? or 20 Different (Like me lol)

I went permy recently money ok is but I am regretting it, I never worked so hard in my life, not sure if I've been unlucky with the employer or I had it easy too as a contrator. I'm stuck on 3 months notice though and they would keep me to it, also think it would be hard to explain why I left a good role with a fancy title within the year. I've had a lot of call about contract work though so option to go back is there but think I will have to stick this out for bit longer.

But working hard isn't a result of the difference between perm and contract is it? If you were a contractor at that client you would be worked just as hard surely? I have had gigs where have been nailed to the wall for everything, hardly time to breath and long days and had gigs where it has been a long slow laid back cruise through the project. I have had exactly the same with permie roles.

I do think this varies between gigs and is not a result of your change in employment status.

Yes me too, my contracts varied between extreme work load to very light.
