I've been contracting for thirty years and haven't encountered a single agent that could even get me a new gig after my current contract expired - although every agent I've worked through - without exception - is happy to cash-in with renewals.

I would have thought after 30 years you might have worked this one out. If he doesn't have a role going at his clients at the time you need one he can't give you a new gig. You go to whatever agent has the role you are after surely..... They don't have a bottomless pit of jobs that will suit you just at the moment you need one, particularly now with the huge influx of smaller and the more specified agencies, there are 100's of them.

Yep, agree with that. CV put forward means little or nothing, but time taken to prepare and do an interview requires a reply.

Let's look at it another way. Would it be acceptable if a contractor went to an interview, got offered the job and then didn't bother responding to tell the agent/client that they weren't going to take it?

Of course it wouldn't be acceptable.

So why would an agency/client think that they wouldn't need to tell a contractor they didn't get the job they had interviewed for.

Yep, that's poor. Exactly the same as when we get someone doing desktop support apply for a CIO role. Doesn't excuse it, but it's two way.

Recruitment firms need to learn from some of the E-commerce giants like Amazon and Ebay on customer preferencing, eg making the electronic communications more relevant and targeted. It is important from both a service and efficiency point of view for us.

I don't think so. You have been in the industry 30 years and can't work out why an agent can't get you another new gig straight after you finish... Must be doing something wrong. You better than anyone should know why and that it just doesn't happen. Particularly nowadays....

How the hell will naming one person, which he will never do on an internet forum make one iota of difference. I can think of three that I would put forward as a good agent... but I aint gonna name them either..

I can give you the S. P. E. C. I. F. I. C. name of a few good agents, that I trust not to waste my time so when they ring me I always answer, if have been contracting for even a relatively small amount of time and have only dealt with the dregs of the industry maybe its just because you are crap
