Yep, agree with that. CV put forward means little or nothing, but time taken to prepare and do an interview requires a reply.

Let's look at it another way. Would it be acceptable if a contractor went to an interview, got offered the job and then didn't bother responding to tell the agent/client that they weren't going to take it?

Of course it wouldn't be acceptable.

So why would an agency/client think that they wouldn't need to tell a contractor they didn't get the job they had interviewed for.

You give us little to go on.

Let's get this right though: you claim you "applied" for just two jobs?

Your post here demonstrates that you are semi-literate; but that's not unlike most of the agents I've dealt with in the past thirty years so I doubt that they'd hold it against you.

I submit that the agents "publish"ed their "jobs" in order solely to harvest CVs because they are struggling for business. They could not care less about replying to punters.

I don't think that is a good example for a number of reasons.

I think it is something to do with the English way of being reserved that we don't like to break bad news to people so we would rather avoid it entirely and leave them hanging !

              No, no, no...
What they wanted (and probably got)
              • What's the market like for widget coders? ("How long have you been looking?")
              • What the market rate for junior widget coders, daft enough to answer these questions? ("What's your current rate?')
              • How desperate are widget coders? ("What rate will you accept?")
              • Who is hiring widget coders? ("Where are you at the moment?")
              • Can I get a foot in the door and dump this loser?("Who is your hiring manager?")

Still, at least one party got what they wanted so it's not all bad news.
Heh very true - But I know most of the times when someone is just on a fishing mission. I actually enjoy the conversation when I know what they are in for..

It is when you know that there is a position on the Market(Well atleast on a job site) they call, tell you (More like lie to you) that they would send you the full spec.

I will ask something here - Does these questions actually play a part in them deciding whether they want to consider your CV or not?
              - How long you have been looking for?
              - How do you think the market is at the moment?

It's better than this guy's analogy though:

The Myth of the "Good Agent"

My advice would be to maintain a healthy skepticism but don't close you mind to people who will be ok and straight.
That would surprise me. Who, precisely. are these putative "good agents" my dear Hallet? Give us some specific names.

                    That's S. P. E. C. I. F. I. C. names.

No, let's make it easier: give us just the name of one "good agent".

Just joking: you're spouting the usual nebulous drivel.

I've been contracting for thirty years and haven't encountered a single agent that could even get me a new gig after my current contract expired - although every agent I've worked through - without exception - is happy to cash-in with renewals.

                      Hi,

You made a great professional start by spelling my name wrong, that flags you as having a low attention to detail or rude. As neither of these are endearing qualities when putting someone forward to represent your brand, don't be surprised if I don't reply!

On a serious note, there are good agents out there. What would make the perfect agent for you?

                      PS I was very good.
