Long-term low pay Vs short-term high pay

This question has been asked before but in the current market which one would you take e.g:

12 months at £325/day

3 months at £375/day

Yes I know security is only as good as your notice period but given those 2 options which one would it be?

All other things being equal (e.g., likelihood of the full period of the contract being honoured, travel, chance to earn new skills and/or experience of an industry sector), I'd take the 12 months at £325 gig. I charge less for longer contracts anyway (usually to a maximum of nine months, at which point the rate stays fairly flat), so I'm happy to trade longevity and predictability for a concession in rate. Besides, clients that are realistic about things like duration of contract are usually easier to help, and more pleasant to work on behalf of. I've never known a contract to last exactly as long as the initial term requested; it's more a measure of the ClientCo's level of realism and/or confidence in their own planning than anything else. A 3 month contract at £375 per day will probably actually last six months, making you an extra ~£6.5k in those six months compared to the 12 month rate. So, if you think you'll spend anything more than £6.5k of your time looking for more work after the '3 month' contract finishes, it's a no-brainer to select the longer duration contract.
