Strange agent responses for SQL/BI roles

I don't know if anybody else has been experiencing this but I keep getting calls from agents with the following happen:

    - Agent calls, describes role and I cut in and ask for rate. They say x/day
    - I respond saying that rate is too low
    - later on I get a call saying that they can now actually offer x+£50/day
    - I then say once again that is too low
    - The same job then pops up again a week later (not been filled)

I asked a couple of agents why they are calling back and they are saying those skills are thin on the ground - but then why are they not offering the right rates?

    Anybody else been experiencing this?

Because they want to prove that they've tried to recruit before bringing in visa bods.

They don't have to expand on the 'why' bit...

            Not quite that much!

Generally they are only £50-£75/day below what I am after (after the increase).

So BI SQL - are we talking SSIS and reporting ?
If so I'd be very surprised to hear that those skills are hard to find.
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

Given the number of bobs current client co is bringing in I would be trying to get more niche skills asap.

There is a reason why my plan b is big data. Find a niche and be ahead of the game.
merely at clientco for the entertainment

BI as in data warehousing/kimball/ssas/cubes etc as well as SSIS and reporting

what kind of niche? it would need to be related to what I am already doing, I would have thought Business Intelligence is more niche than say general SQL development or app development....
