(they act for the client not for you and it is worth bearing that in mind at all times).
This may be true in most cases however if I have a good candidate I will spend a day, a week or what ever it takes to get him/her a job.
To their credit - most S3 companies will do that also. The only reason we work for the clients more often than candidates is because we're in a client driven market.
DA - Couldn't agree more. I get paid on time so that's all I care about.
I am surprised (perhaps naivley) that an agent wouldn't try to keep the contractor at the site for as long as possible when the client looks to go for a permie....regular cash flow etc...
Keeping the contractor onsite for as long as possible while the permie settles in is a chance for double bubble.....
A one way relationship is all well and good but agents could get more out of a contract if they spoke to the contractor - the thing is everyone is screwing everyone else so nobody does.....

Fair point!
Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone
Best People - good, paid on time, help in contract renegotiations, met up bought a round and a meal occassionally.
Allegis - same a Best People if not better.
Alex Mann - not bad in contract, paid on time, but difficult to find when contract came to an end. No real contact during contract period.
Capital International - efficient in getting interview and contract, pay quickly, otherwise little contact so far.
My latest role was initially for 3 months whilst the customer found a permmie.
I got a 3 month extension which ends this month and I am reasonably hopeful of renewal for another 3 months. If not, I have met some good guys, had a few laughs, done some good work, got paid and hey its summer!!
You can see if its a 'real' labour recruitment business. It should be registered with SIC code 7450 - Labour recruitment
If it is not then it is your competition and you may not wish to share information in such case.
Beware of non labour recruitment 'agencies' as identity theft through job posting boards has been known since at least 2002. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3078533/
Though I am sure that todays efforts are more sophisticated and may even reach to get info on the firewalls of previous employers etc.
A definitive list of agencies with reviews would be of great interest to me. If the contracting community is interested then I will be happy to use some web skills in setting up a site for this purpose. Its not the first time Ive seen a request for Agency-centric information on this site.

That would seem like a good idea.
However, I think somebody made the point somewhere that there are might legal problems with this??!?! In case agencies take legal action against defamation!?!? although I might have got the facts wrong.
I would love to read reviews from more experienced professionals that have posted on here...

Not really, as long as the information is presented in a neutral unbiased manner. There is nothing that can be said for a rating of 1-5 to indicate unhappy-happy. It is merely representing user feedback. Of course if you publish it as a 'avoid these' kind of blacklist then that's an entirely different story!

(Excellent piece of advice on the Companies House bit by the way!)
I would be very interested in something like that. A very useful aspect would be to gauge whether just the particular recruiter one is dealing with is a muppet or whether the whole company is dodgy (or the other way around - good recruiter in an otherwite badly rated company would e.g. influence how I handle non-payment).
