Extension time - been told verbally but nothing sorted yet

As far as manager is concerned, he wants me to stay, and I would like to stay. However, he did say final budget decision ultimately is not down to him.

Red tape here is uncanny. Bloke who decides on extensions is in Ireland, and all contract negotiations are done in France.

Got in touch with the agency last week to remind them but no news yet. Two weeks left now.

It looks 99% like I will get an extension, but do I look around and even apply for other stuff just in case? I realise a promise is not worth anything until contract is in your mits....

Also, what happens if come last day it aint been extended? I'm assuming that even if client wants me to stay while they sort out details I dont until contract is all done and dusted? I'd imagine they wouldnt be too keen on this but I can see this happening the way things are going here....

    1. Start looking for a new contract - wait until you get one before you decide what to do
    2. If on the last day nothing has been agreed then don't come on site until you have something signed.

      ....
Well done. you have answered all you own questions.

      1. You do not have a contract extension, until you have the contract extension !!

      2. On the last day, if you have not been extended, then you have not been extended !!

      3. If you have not been extended, you should look for other work. In fact, common sense dictates that you should do that anyway. Just looking for work does not oblige you to take it should your extension arrive.

EVERYTHING about contracting (or indeed everything) IS COMMON SENSE !!

Ideally, you walk out on last day. In smaller organisations, you may be requested to stay with a promise of 'will be sorted out soon' , but with larger organisations you generally will not be allowed in if you do not have a written contract.

Based on what you describe about the place, I would not continue beyond the written contract end date based on verbal promises.

Which poses serious problems for the OP.

If you can't work out what you should be doing when you do not have a contract I think a career re-think is in order.

But how far do you extend the goodwill?

And anyway, surely without a written contract in place your PI insurance becomes invalid and arent you opening yourself up to IR35 just a little too? i.e turning up like a permie but with no supply contract in place?

When contracting for IBM, they were notoriously bad at communicating extensions for contractors (the agency weren't much help either). At one point I was emailed the extension in contract form on the last day, friday at 5.25pm as I was declining all the meetings in the following week, saying I wouldn't be in the office.

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.

Contracts in England and Wales can be verbal so you other points are invalid.
