I went for a 5 series too, but I kind of wish I'd gone down the Mondeo route like Dave. Brilliant car for commuting.
Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

I do up to 40k miles a year in an Alpina B3BT which averages around 25-30 mpg (I think) but here in Germany its a bit different. I put the car through the business which means that I have to do a certain amount (quite a high percentage) of mileage for business use only. However I get all the VAT back on anything to do with the car, including the purchase of the car, and the way that it works is that the savings I make actually pay for the car. With my last car, the AMG, I actually didn't pay a penny for it, which was nice. Leasing on the other hand would have cost me a fair bit...

My only concern is that the 3 series will probably change shape soon - they've had this one for a good few years now.
I have seen a few with disguises on driving around Munich.

We currently have a 2006 Fiat Punto 1.9 Diesel Eleganza, don't think they make it anymore.

Bought when 2 years old and 27k miles. Ebay £4.5k.
            45 mpg
            125-130mph at a push, allegedly.
            Fun to drive
Done nearly 45k in last 2.5 years.

Was looking at 60 reg Nissan Murano recently, luxurious, all bells and whistles, 2.5L diesel, 35mpg.

You need to be a dwarf to fit inside one.

I'm 6'5" and I fitted in quite nicely, not too sure what room anyone in the back would get though lol!

This is what I'll be getting next. Currently have a 320i coupe, love the comfort and style, hate the petrol engine. 35-39mpg. Efficient dynamics, perfect blend of style and economy.

Although I've discovered car sharing, which I've decided, is the way forward.

The AA have a useful page here for calculating the true costs of running a car on a pence per mile basis.

Running Cost Tables : diesel car running costs - The AA

Based on this I'm saving around £9 a day by taking the train rather than driving 50 miles each way to the office.

Seeing over the steering wheel is totally overrated.
