Can anyone recommend any accommodation in Newcastle for a weekly commute? I've accepted a six month contract starting Monday and haven't got anywhere to stay yet!

Way to go. Great planning and execution
Find a local Travellodge or budget type hotel. If you convince them you will be using them for a number of weeks they can drop the price in most cases. Either that or just use it for the first two weeks to get familiar with your surroundings.
Get yourself something like that and don't worry. First week few weeks on new gigs working away from home can be painful enough without busting a gut trying to find accomodation. Bit late now, but renting is pretty reasonable compared to hotels. When I was looking for a potential contract there, there were some pretty decent places close to the centre for reasonable money.
But yeah, it's far too late for that now.

Not quite the answer you were looking for I guess, but I stayed at the Jurys Inn in Newcastle for a stag do a few months ago, and it was comfortable, well positioned, and had teams of hen parties there all the time...
If a good totty rating is high on your list, the give it a try.

I'll be driving home on Friday evenings for the weekend anyway so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Besides I could sleep through an earthquake!

I've only had to work away once (and what a tulip hole Darlington is!!) but if I had to do it again, top of my list would be Newcastle.
If you do stay at the Jurys Inn, take note that the first few bars you will get to as you venture into the centre are the bars at the edge of the Gay part of town. As I found out to my disadvantage once, but that's another story....Comment
