Thanks for all the suggestions. I've negotiated a slightly improved rate with the Jurys Inn for next week, I'll probably be able to find something cheaper for the week after.
-
try googling farmstay, it's out of the city but I quite like it.....also can negotiate with the owners if you stay long term.....
I need peace and quiet when I sleep...so out in the sticks for me as opposed to staying in the centre and going clubbing etc....I'll get me slippers...

If you're working north of the tyne do not get accommodation on the south side because it's murder getting over that bridge on a morning (unless you use the metro with the normal people
)

To be honest if I was there as a Monday to Friday contractor I would hate the place.Originally posted by ChrisPackit View PostThought I might be putting the cat amongst the pigeons with that statement !!
It was just so grim staying up there for me, as I stayed above a pub that all the local in-bred’s drunk in, because the beer was 10 pence a pint, and they’d never heard of closing time.
I think it all boils down to finding decent accommodation and I seem to always end up staying on farms simply to avoid scenario's like the one above.

I totally agree with that! They were the only budget ones I could think of. If you book early enough or pay them enough up front I believe it is possible to get some of them down to £29 a night or whatever the lowest offers some of them do. Doesn't seem to bad at that rate.... but as you say, you don't get much for your dollar.Originally posted by Fred Bloggs View PostThat's good advice but when ever I have looked at Travel Lodge/Premier Inn etc, I have found them really expensive for what they offer.

Find a local Travellodge or budget type hotel. If you convince them you will be using them for a number of weeks they can drop the price in most cases. Either that or just use it for the first two weeks to get familiar with your surroundings.
Get yourself something like that and don't worry. First week few weeks on new gigs working away from home can be painful enough without busting a gut trying to find accomodation. Spend a little on hotels, get comfortable and then look for something better when you are there.

If you do stay at the Jurys Inn, take note that the first few bars you will get to as you venture into the centre are the bars at the edge of the Gay part of town. As I found out to my disadvantage once, but that's another story....

I'll be driving home on Friday evenings for the weekend anyway so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Besides I could sleep through an earthquake!

to be honest personally its got a great location but it can be a bit noisy as people return during the night.Originally posted by magicbuttons View PostIt has just mysteriously moved to the top of my list
Probably not much of a problem during the week but Saturday night can be rather loud.

I only interviewed yesterday and was offered the gig there and then, so it would have been a bit premature any sooner! Thanks, I'll see what I can negotiate with the hotels.
