If the job was THAT bad, rest easy, you have made the right decision. I went through a similar nightmare with Tesco a few years back and walked out acrimoniously. If I'd have stayed, I would have had a nervous breakdown. A few months off left me feeling like a new man. Best decision I EVER made.
Some of the posters around here seem to think it's a simple matter of either being in work or not: it isn't. You physical and mental well-being are much more important. Sometimes life is just to damn short to put up with a-holes and stress, all day, every day, no matter how much the job pays.
I wish you all the best. Have a good long break and enjoy yourself - it's sounds to me like you deserve it.
PS. I've a contracting mate who has just gone back to RBS after a break from them, and he too hates it there now.

Well said, I totally agree with everything said here.. looking after yourself, your well being, your happiness.. it's all worth far more than money will ever buy you.. it will work out for the best, because if you've got to the stage where you would rather not work there, then whatever happens next will be better.
Onwards and upwards!!
The cycle of life: born > learn > work > learn > dead.
I had a terrible contract with Sainsburys a few years back. The line manager was the most rude and abusive person I have ever seen. I finished my 3 months term but in hindsight I should have left the contract immediately . Your mental health is more important than these kind of contracts.

WHS - sorry to hear the gig didn't work out - enjoy the break!
Regarding the OpenVMS... I doubt it. In the 3 months I was there, I never came across it.
Regarding the recruiter... nope... but bearing in mind what I've said about a couple of people in RBS, it would probably be for the best that the CUK forum wasn't mentioned. If you do apply for this role, drop me a PM and I will tell you my first name.

Did you have to quit rather than find a substitute here for £20-50/day less than you were paid?
Anyhow, I'm on your side and I hope you don't end up regretting it in a few months.
What he said.
I've turned down 3 extensions over the years, 1 because I was terminally bored, 1 because I was totally exhausted and needed a long holiday and one because they were total and utter morons and I would have shown up on the telly as an "enraged axe weilding Yorkshire man slaughters Leeds corporate HQ staff" news story the next Monday.
