so the general consensus is put up and shut up. Interestingly thats probably why the agents do it because they know they can get away with it.

As I've said previously I'm not suggesting anything will happen quite the contrary been around the contracting world too long to think anything will ever change but what has happened with this particular agent is beyond the norm of what I've grown to expect

Guess who they are going to call first when they have a contract of a lifetime?? Not you....

I would always try to see things from their side, they have been told to call you by their manager and I would not take things too personally. Better to be honest with them and say you know what they are doing and why and try to work with them to help them to do their job that is to get you a fat, juicy contract sometime down the line....

Between you and me, I did help out an agent friend for a couple of weeks in the early 80's when some of his staff left over a weekend to start their own agency (mates agency still going, deserters folded after a few months)...

Maybe some of the agent magic dust rubbed off on me....

I see nothing wrong with complaining if you think a company has genuinely broken a law. It's entirely possible that line managers or anyone getting commission may behave in a way the directors wouldn't approve of.
Of course it's more likely nothing will happen, but I applaud the effort.

I doubt they will ever have the contract of a lifetime and I suspect they won't even survive the year and even if they did so I've missed out on one contract maybe at least I'm not getting aggressive threatening phone calls from them anymore.

Garden Girl, if they've done something illegal or unethical then you're right to go ahead and complain. Especially as you don't have exaggerated idea of what results you'll get.
Yes agencies are all about getting the sales, but it's a small world which is why some of them at least try to keep a lid on the more unethical behaviour.

I just make a note of any agent that pisses me off and if more than one agent pisses me off from the same agency I just ask them to remove my details from their database and never speak to them again.

That is as much as you can do.
