No they don't. Your level of skill is evident from interview. And as a contractor you can be binned with 2 minutes notice. The client may need references but not the agent. they just want references to tap up about potential roles they hope to fill.

Yes, the level of skill is evident from the interview. In my case was the client who contact the references, I know because the references forward me the email with the work history confirmation.

References are a bit of a moot point these days anyway; a lot of places can only give factual indications about the start and end date, etc., so performance-related referees don't count for tulip.
