How many USD$ would it take to make you work in the US?

Got called up about a permie job in NY paying $110K... is that enough to get by there? How much do you think you need to earn there to live "like a contractor" there?

Hmm $110K is pretty good by US standards and the cost of living (I was in LA) is maybe around 20% less than the UK and you'll be paying around 10% less tax. $150K would have you living the la vida contractor but 110K is not too bad...

Maybe I should have asked - what would $110K in NY be equivalent to earning in London?

I'm pretty sure I can earn more in Sydney...

I guess it depends on whether you intend to settle there, or are going there intending to save and come back to London, er I mean the UK.

$110k would allow you to live a comfortable life in the US, especially if you took a heap of £ with you to buy a house etc.

OTHH, the $/£ rate means that it isn't worth it if you're only going in order to save up money.

Finally, if you're going for the experience, then $110k is worthwhile and I'm sure you'd come back having enjoyed yourself.

        New York is tulipe BTW.

Houses are dirt cheap. In Florida can you pick up a detached house with a swimming pool for about 300K.
          I'm alright Jack

Wow they still have concordes there. Cool!

Well yeah, I'd like to save as much as possible while I'm there but on that salary I think I'll be worse off, all things considered. Then again if I don't get renewed here then I'm probably screwed anyway.

Tazman - why do you say NY is tulipe? My first impressions when I visited was that its a big scary place, but I'm sure I could settle into it...

Surely the thing to do is sell your house over here, pocket the quids and emigrate to the US buying a place mortgage free over there leaving a few hundred $k in the bank? It's crossed my mind once or twice - especially the scheme where you have to buy a business to get in.
...my quagmire of greed....my cesspit of laziness and unfairness....all I am doing is sticking two fingers up at nurses, doctors and other hard working employed professionals...
