But there wasn't any major computer advancements in the last 2-3 years which really benefited AI, or was there? It just seems like someone somewhere did some algorithm improvements, chatGPT was made available to the larger public and then things started rolling (I'm oversimplifying things of course).

Transformers algos were discovered in 2017 by Google researchers.
Between 2017 and 2022 GPUs got about 10x faster.

discovered? like fossils? or atomic particles?
        really?
        wow.
        who knew?

          Thats an interesting and topic.

          Is mathematics invented or discovered?

Pythagorus Theorem sounds more like a discovery rather that an invention.

The algorithm for doing column addition, was that invented or discovered?, a bit more grey.

nVidias Blackwell GPU is being delayed, but Cerebras already have solved the problem with their insane wafer scale technology. I wonder if nVidia might be a potential buyer of Cerebras, which is currently filing for an IPO.

Seeing a few cotnract gen AI roles appearing now - I would say there is an increase versus 6 months ago. I think working with this tech is pretty demanding and has a pretty steep learning curve. But there is also a demand for big organisations to automate how they converse with everyone they interact with, so we are sort of in a moment when a technology matures into usefulness. Yeah, there is an AI bubble for sure, but that doesn't stop something from growing, its just the misplaced capital gets destroyed. So I think whatever the business cycle or market irrationality is saying, AI is still a growing trend.

Rates for many of these seem low, this one at £340 inside, and seen similar things for less. Makes me think, they are looking for young people, with the skillset and keen learners, not us oldies with families and higher rate expectations. When I started out as a contractor, I made £240/day writing Java, which demand remained high for throughout the dotcom boom and crash period.

Would like to get more into AI myself. Does feel like a younger persons game though.

Seen quite a few wanting CoPilot or Gemini experience. I presume for integration purposes.

Watched a review of the new google pixel yesterday which has AI integrated into it (Gemini) and I couldn't be less impressed. You can chat to something resembling chatGPT, create silly pictures or search through screenshots. When is this bubble popping? I'm not saying AI hasn't got areas where it shines, but I feel like it's just being pushed down everyone's throats just because it exists.

AI = 'Algorithmic Interference' or 'Algorithmic Indoctrination'
so, instead of what You want to see, you get what the Vendor wants you to see.

Generative AI or chatbotting is a tiny subset of AI, though, it's at the party trick end of the spectrum. There are, OTOH, may applications in science, engineering and medicine where AI techniques are proving to be absolutely transformative. Not that they are a recent invention, but the practicality of actually using them has surged, as well as efforts to improve the underlying models.
