Why do recruiters ask for your rate?

I see we've had the first edit to his story. ConTArch initially said that the client said the recruiter was paid a percentage on top of the rate agreed with the client.
    He's now removed that bit.

Which bit of the story gets edited next?

Maybe that the rate range was dependent on experience and it turns out that CTA doesn't have the experience for the top rate.

…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Do you also want to know why water is wet and fire is hot?

          Here's a possible scenario....

          - recruiter is pissed off with you. Quite rightly.
          - recruiter has another possible candidate
          - recruiter sets up interview for other candidate
          - interview goes well
          - recruiter tells the client that are not available any more, and are a bit of a dick as well as you tried to hike your rate after the interview
          - YOU DON'T GET THE ROLE

Whatever you do never forget that you are simply an easy to find, replaceable resource who is far too costly for the client to mess around with someone who might even in the slightest chance turn out to be a bit of a twat. If you're a twat to the recruiter then that information harms your case and negotiation.
I don't have a problem with any of these outcomes. The recruiter is driving my rate down so he can pocket the difference. Balls to him.

I have an email offer from the recruiter for the role. I'm going to negotiate rate later today, I want the max from the original ad. If he says no, he can get on the phone to his number 2 choice.

I guessed that is what the recruiter was getting - I removed it because I'm not sure and didn't want to give the pedants something to bash me with.

Why is this place so full of trolls?

If you even mention that I believed one word from a recruiters mouth, you get absolutely hammered for being a total idiot. I'm told that I shouldn't even assume the recruiter knows what role I'm applying for? This doesnt' even make sense.

5 versions of the post at 2.25 this morning. (and I'm not counting the two posts that he deleted before it)
2 of the one at 10:17
4 (so far) of the post at 11:28

May I suggest to anyone that replies to CTA that you quote the post you are replying to, so that when he changes it, your reply still makes sense.

Or we could never reply to CTA at all

Half the blasted adverts are fishing anyway, so how do you even know you've applied for an actual opportunity.

very wet behind the ears. I'd almost say 'downloaded with the last service pack'
Balls to this place. It's just full of bullies.

I'm just trying my best. I don' know the ins and outs of how recruiters run the market here. I've only been contracting for less than two years after many years working abroad.

everything I say is just met with an attack.
                    • I sent my CV to an ad
                      • OH DAMN!!! it's fake and you got scammed you idiot
                    • I called a recuiter
                      • OH DAMN! you assume he even knew that you have applied to a role
                    • Recruiter tried to maximise his profit
                      • OH tulip!! you must not have the skills for the top rate
                    • I don't know why rates are different for the same ad across different sites
                      • HAHAH noob, you're too fresh to even know about recruiters screwing you
                    • I complain that the recruiter is driving rates down to pocket the difference
                      • Get over it idiot, standard practice.
                    • I edit something to try and make the writing a little more clear and remove conjecture
                      • I must be lying or fake?

I don't know how you all can be so miserable.

over 15 years in tech, I'm not an idiot. I just didn't know recruiters drive you down to to pocket the difference. I would have thought their contracts specificy renumeration (probably a percentage on top) and taking anything else isn't acceptable. Clearly that's not the case and I might as well stfu and go away.

A lovely community you've got here.

I edit for clarity because I don't write well the first time and hit the post button too quickly... that makes me a terrible person apparently.

I'm not a troll, sorry you think I am. Sorry I've done some things that you can't believe because you can't imagine doing them yourselves. This is like a tuliptier version of secondary school.

Given all that. Would it be better that you take what is offered by people with more experience rather than arguing?
when you post opinions that are wrong or misleading they could be read by others with little experience and accepted as fact. You are called out when wrong to improve the quality of the info on the forum.
                      trolling is for general.

the mods do give everyone a hard time if they are abusive and don’t add value.

my advice…. Ask questions if you don’t know. Don’t post guesswork or speculation as fact. As a tech architect this is how you do your job so use the same approach here.
