I've just been informed by email that I'm now expected to take 40 days leave per year (including 8 bank holidays) - 3rd rate cut this year, although I was exempted from one and the other was forced furlough of 20 days and palatable.

A 12 month contract that pays 10 months doesn't sound so good though.

Exactly how many days do you normally take during a year though? I can easily push the 40 days in a year as I see it as one of the benefits of contracting to be able to take what I want and not worry about it.

When was the last time you did a 12 month gig that paid 12 months? Never I'll bet.

I would be interested to know who it is, I don't know anyone that is making that much time off mandatory.

I would happily take 4 weeks prior to this - plus the BHs

I did 12 months without a break once on my first contract. Never again.

Anyways there is very little wriggle room in this rate so I either get a rate increase to offset or move on. The point I was making was that 40 days enforced seems a bit harsh.

Sounds like either cost cutting or formalizing how contractors are costed internally.

Either way its 6 weeks and 2 days of holiday and 8 bank holidays. Given that as I Permie I had 28 + 8 and still didn't have enough I would happily accept them formalizing what I would be taking off anyway.

I presume you got paid for your holiday when you were a permie ? A rate cut is a rate cut no matter how you dress it up.

But you also have to reset your expectations. If you think a 12 month contract is 12 months then you are going to be constantly disappointed. You are going to take time of and there are bank holidays. Subtract what you'd normally take off and the picture doesn't look quite so bleak.

So far this year I've willingly had 64 days off excluding bank holidays. I've also got at least another 9 (excluding the 3 bank holidays) to go...
