How many years as a Permie before you took the leap into contracting?

Hi, decided to do a separate thread for - So i'm currently contracting as a BA in the IB sector, I will have just over three years experience BA experience come January (two years of which are at two Tier 1 IB's in the way of two one year contracts) although this is a good amount of varied experience considering I'll only be around 3.5 years out of Uni, it will put me in the firing line to compete against the contractors with 10 plus years experience. Not sure if I'll stand much of a chance of securing a contract in this case, and whether I have just been lucky so far!

What I want to ask you guys is how long do you think is the 'right' amount of experience/years before someone should ideally look to start contracting specifically for a BA/PM role in a London IB. How long did you guys stay perm (if at all) before you took the leap, and what was your respective area/skill.

    Cheers

According to your other thread you're currently a PMO rather than a BA. I think you need to understand the roles better. You're either a BA or PM. You can do both and be bad at both or pick one and good at one.

No, he's a young. inexperienced BA who is performing admin tasks. I was the one who mentioned PMO roles (which the OP was rather snippy about IIIRC).

I'd been a permie for 20 years, working from Programmer to BA.

A BA would need a minimum of 5 years work experience before beginning their BA career IMO.

Contracting another matter, but certainly more than 3 years.

With 3 years experience, join a consultancy as a permie. You get the correct mentoring and training with the likes of Deloitte/PA/KMPG. Of course they'll farm you out, but as an independent contractor you wouldn't get a look-in at the types of contract you need in order to gain the experience you require.

6 years for me, but economic times were bad during that period.

I would have been happy after around 4 or 5 years, however I was already doing the full job for around that time.
Came up to London with around 3K, rented a flat and spent every minute on Jobserve.
It took me 3 months to find my first one and I have never looked back.

No, I never stated I was a PMO, my title has always been Business Analyst in every role I've had since Uni, I just happened to have taken on a lot of PMO work in my current BA contract. I know precisely what a BA and a PMO does.

Anyway not sure how your post is in anyway a relevant contribution to this thread.

25 years of permydom 12 as a developer/ AP and the rest in the PM space.

My mistake, you're right you didn't mention PMO. However it doesn't sound like you're actually doing a BA role no matter what your job title says. My point on understanding a role still stands, you can be one or the other.

Experience in role 5-8 yrs depending on how much other industry/work experience you have.

That would mean you have an IR35 problem then. I'm assuming you know what that is?

Yes i'm aware of the IR35 rule, but I'm currently contracting in Europe, not the UK.
