So - I have been offered a contract. 50% the rate of my previous (inside and admittedly well paid) gig but outside IR35 and 100% remote.

        ftfy,

So he picked up on the fact that you thought you were better than him (because your linked in profile was longer than his)

We all need to feign super enthusiasm and submissiveness/humility for that one hour to help land a role in this market.

That's just it - I did feign enthusiasm and humility however some interviewers are aren't interested if you can do the job. They are looking for people who fit their own preconceptions about what makes a good candidate.

Been like that for ages the actual work is still around but you will never see so much as a sniff of it as 99.9% is left to the indian outsourcers who now dominate & control the entire market. Only time you will see a contract in London is when the Front Office business management people paying the bills insist on a decent contractor. I still get the odd role come to my inbox for 6 months only with no renewal guarantee but cba to do them as most of it will go to the taxman so happy to pass the parcel or pass the buck!

Nearly all the major IB in London have resource centres at those locations you mention. To give you an idea of the perm rate difference as I used to work at a major IB in London who have their main IT centre well outside Canary Wharf.....the perm rate difference between canary wharf vs midlands was on average 30-35% lower in Midlands & 40-45% lower in Edinburgh. Contractor rates were even lower on average 50-60% lower outside Canary Wharf. Canary Wharf rates were also pitiful in the £120-150 a day range INSIDE IR35 ROFL!

They have heavily for ages pushed all IT systems so that it can be handled remotely from any location via Citrix or some other middleware.

Its simply never ever going to change as cost is everything nowadays if they can shift thousands of jobs to somewhere way cheaper they will & the only reason many of these jobs are even in the UK still is to do with regulations! Once those get altered a lot more IT work will simply get moved outside UK where its even cheaper again to hire people!

Congratulations. Being fully remote is the most important thing for a lot of people now, including myself. First thing I look for nowadays rather than the rate. Mid 50's now though so priorities have changed somewhat.

I am 52. There is no way I am commuting two or three days a week to London unless rates return to where they were in the good old days.

I am happy to do two days a month though even it means commuting from Essex to (say) Leeds for a much lower rate.

The gig I have been offered is 100% remote though so even better.

Surely some contractors who have spent an extended time on the bench will apply?

Some on this forum have been benched for 3 years now.
