You need to quantify that number for your statement to be any use. I'd imagine that's a very low overall percentage so not really adding to the problem. Easy to throw the term 'many' in but I'd doubtful its enough to be a contributing factor really.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

It's not all doom and gloom if you verticalise yourself. e.g. if you're a Java dev, maybe you're a Java dev with deep retail and logistics experience?
I'm finding that there's plenty of work out there for specialists, not so much for generic devs who just list a bunch of languages and platforms you've worked with.Comment

Sure, I know a great deal of doctors (> 200). There is not a single one that is not fed up with the NHS and looking to do private work only or move abroad. Regular conversations with friends and colleagues about how to move to one of the Gulf states/Aus/NZ/Canada to escape the hell hole that this place has become. Agreed not many of those professionals will actually take the plunge and move but more and more are trying to do so. As for doctors, they pretty much all want out, so the brain drain in that segment is already well and truely under way (backed up by data - https://www.bmj.com/content/379/bmj.o3066).Originally posted by northernladuk View Post

Maybe we could say: focus on verticalisation.Comment

With the exception of finance, you never see that kind of thing mentioned much on job adverts eg "Must have deep retail experience" If it really was so important then you would see it more often. I guess it helps as a filter when the client gets a 100 CVs.Originally posted by DrewG View Postdeep retail and logistics experience?Last edited by Fraidycat; 25 May 2023, 13:59.Comment

I see it all of the time. Sometimes I will even filter ads on my industry vertical areas of expertise. I've been doing that for 8 years now and I've never unwillingly been out of contract.Originally posted by Fraidycat View Post

I am not a Dev but the perception of 'being a lot of work out there' and actually landing a new contract are two very different things at the moment.Originally posted by DrewG View PostIt's not all doom and gloom if you verticalise yourself. e.g. if you're a Java dev, maybe you're a Java dev with deep retail and logistics experience?

Got my contract through for the gig I have been offered. They are doing the usual set piece of trying to lump the IR35 liability onto my shoulders so have kicked back and asked for an amendment.
Keep my seat on the bench warm. I may still need it
