yes, I'm the same. This time though I got contacted by decent agents with whom I have worked before, got me roles and never did me dirty so I'm confident the roles they mentioned and the rates are actually legit. Hopefully they go to fellow contractors I know

I got sent this a few days (not sure why, i'm not a PM). Look at that day rate!



Out of interest, I did ask if it was inside or outside IR35 from April - no response, but i suspect inside/umbrella, since the day rate says "all in MAX".

Is this a firm in Manchester by any chance? If it is they have a very high turnover of staff and always advertise at rubbish rates. The perm jobs max out about 40k for C++, Unity, 3D etc etc.

Contract market suddenly booming, right when I'm about to go permie. Agents have been messaging me on linkedIn for the last 2 days with different contract opportunities. They seem pretty desperate because when I say I'm off the market they ask if I can recommend anyone (which they hardly ever did before).

The roles they talked to me about are all for public sector clients, all outside ir35 and paying from 350 to 450 a day. Not too shabby to be honest.

Agent Translation: I need to pay the bills, is there anyone else other than you that i can shaft for free information on these pretend roles now that you are going perm and are now worthless to me ?

Depends on what industries the companies you are contracting with work in on whether they have to reference you. They don't reference people for fun.

I am afraid the practise is common place in commercial settings in order to get market information about hiring managers and they don’t do it for fun, they do it because it’s in their commercial interests to do so - for the data.

many agencies that recruit people direct into companies will try it on it’s pretty much aligned to the two references sticky sticky at the top of the forum.

I can however fully understand the need to verify background for a IR35 caught public sector BAU role.

Contractually ‘proper’ consultancies are legally obliged to take any hits if they don’t properly check out their staff and that is legally binding. That said, I’ve never been asked for them by consultancies either because they have the staff available to ask around about you instead and i do know that this goes on.

Three weeks into a new contract and of course, after 10 months of radio silence, I had a whole bunch of calls asking after availability.

Frankly this served only to remind me to make not visible my CV!

In a market governed by supply and demand I can fully accept that some people will be in more demand than others, but at the risk of being cynical I am very dubious about people describing the market as booming. The country has just suffered it's largest drop in economic output in 300 years.

Do people forget once they find a contract how big the journey from confident sounding agent to sending first invoice is?

I think I may be the lucky one

Finished a year long contract on Friday Feb 26th after managing to stay in contract in the airline industry throughout 2020.

Took a week to chill and then put some feelers out. Tuesday - agency contacted me about a client I had been at previously. Catch up interview/chat Friday. Offer made verbally.

This morning, offer confirmed, contract signed, laptop been shipped out to me ready for a Monday start. Six months to end of September - outside IR35 and rate somewhat north of £500 per day.
