Where to start - finance contract roles

I understand that this forum is primarily focused on IT contractors.

I am moving to the UK from Australia in May. I have a finance background and will be on a tier 5 working holiday visa. I am interested in 3 to 6 month contract roles but not sure where to start. I have previously only worked in permie roles for the last 8 years primarily in financial modelling and analysis. I had a look at the First-timers guide, although it mostly seems to be geared towards IT contracting.

I was wondering if anyone has any job search websites or forums that you can direct me to. Would appreciate advice on where to start. Thanks guys.

You can Google for jobs UK and the name of the tool you use. That might give you links to the agents.
I always use Jobserve, but you may have to spoof your IP as some sites will not give you UK jobs if you are not in the UK.
    Fiscal nomad it's legal.

We are not all IT contractors, and the guides are 80 to 90% valid for other sectors.

I don't know where to look for finance contracts, but best advice I can give is to use your LinkedIn network - there must be plenty of Ozzies in finance who can get you an intro.

I'd say start with the Newbie Guides to the right as you are going to have to set up a company and get a bank accountant before the agents will touch you (or at least be ready to move quickly if you get an offer). You've also got a whole host of hoops to jump to find a premises to rent as it's unlikely you can register a business at the place you are renting to live (short hold tenancy's more often won't allow it).

You are going to have to have a very good idea of what you are doing as well as there will be a lot of experienced guys ahead of you and if you give the agent or the client any cause for concern around what you need to do they'll move on etc...

Lots of prep for you to be doing and it's not all just gig hunting.

            +1 for jobserve.

Not sure about this one, but could you approach any financial institutions in Oz that have divisions in the UK to see if they have any openings?

Before moving here do lots of research on if you could even pass the security vetting. Its been tightened up a lot in recent years you need to prove:

              Police record is clean
              Credit record is clean
Provide bank, credit card & or mortgage statements for the last 2-3 years minimum usually
              Previous employers background reference (s)
Education check (they will want to validate your qualifications)

Most banks now require this some want even more detail depending on the role. It takes around 4-6 weeks for basic background checks if your a UK citizen for IT financial services roles during which time you will not be allowed to start the contract so its unpaid sitting on the bench time. I would target non financial services roles see how much response you get now & ask the agents the security vetting requirements as some still insist on these checks in non banking roles.

Try to contact UK based Aussies see what they say but its not as easy as it used to be due to all the increased security vetting checks & increased competition from EU import workers who will do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

I think probably a fair few of us have set up businesses against the literal terms of our rental contracts. Seems a bit over zealous to worry about it though, it's not as if you've opened a restaurant

Possibly but it won't happen in any of my properties. You are in breach so giving me the option to turf them out whenever I feel like it. Not a position you really want to be in when it can easily be avoided. Seems a silly risk to me.
