Now there are studies about discrimination against Muslims in France, but race is harder to pin down because officially it doesn't exist due to official attitudes re: The Republic.

Here's an interesting opinion piece from the Guardian.

All I'm saying is if I had a "foreign-sounding" name and was asked for a photo prior to an interview being scheduled, I'd rightly wonder if it was a factor. As an employer I'd shy away from giving that appearance.

OK, so no link to a story that was several years old.
No evidence that the jobs were IT contracting.
And the only thing you offer is a link to an opinion piece.

Sorry mate, but you seem to be applying employee rules to contractors, and that's not how it works.

BTW, my real name is "foreign sounding" to many people who interview me, in fact even those whose native language is similar to mine sometime struggle to pronounce it correctly.
I have worked in several countries where my native language is not their native language. I have also worked in places where my perceived background could have been seen as a good reason not to employ me (based on things which have happened in the last 100 years)

What, you real name is not the WTFH?
I must admit, though, I have always had trouble pronouncing it

That's great. I didn't realise that people who contract are exempt from the same societal issues as full-time staff. What paper do you read, exactly?

I did update the post with an additional article.

My point was very simple: OP asked is it even legal to ask for a photo after stating his CV was "of interest" and I expressed surprise any employer would ask for one prior to booking an interview for fear of being accused of being discriminatory if the interview didn't go ahead following receipt of photo. No need to argue the toss.

That one has been answered already several times.

I don't read any paper exactly.

I read some very inexactly, and mostly via their websites.
