Depends what you are buying - the discounts range from 2% to 12%

You'd possibly be better off getting 7% off at PC World or Argos or 10% off at House of Fraser and buying there instead.

My soon to start contract (first ever, I'm new to this) forces me to have the following insurances:

- Professional Indemnity Insurance - £1 million
- Public Liability – £1 million
- Employers Liability - £1 million

Will I get them if I join IPSE+ ? I'm not really sure if the "insurance" you guys have been talking about in this thread have something to do with the ones I need.
If not, what are the most common way to have them? What do you recommend me?

No, but you can get them at a discount as a member; for the average contractor it's around £200 from Randell Dorling (other providers are available: just make sure you are comparing like-for-like in terms of cover if you go for a cheaper option). IPSE covers you for any and all tax investigations as well as a pile of other necessary stuff but commercial cover can't really be included. Have a look at the "Join Us" page for the details.

If you've found IPSE, make sure you download and read their Guide to Freelancing. You have no idea how much you don't know!

So far I've been looking at Hiscox, QDOS and Caunce O'Hara. I didn't know about Randell Dorling so I will check, but apparently they resell Hiscox's.

The cheapest I could find was almost £300 + VAT

As has been said, you're probably better off getting a better amount of discount off a third party.

The problem with most of these discounts is that they come in the form of a gift card or paper voucher that's posted to you (taking a few days) and then needs to be activated (happens a day or two later) - hence a lot of the time you can't be bothered to wait and don't get the discount. In the era of online ordering and instant provision of gift vouchers that seems incredibly restrictive.

I tried. I didn't get beyond their insistence that they needed my payroll number.

Some of the discounts aren't any different than those you can get by searching for a voucher code.

But the gift card thing does look worth pursuing - either for a large one-off purchase, or for something like Sainsbury's where you might shop regularly. Most look as if you can top up online once you've gone through the initial hassle of getting it. Some are electronic.

Haven't used any myself yet (after a failed attempt on one discount) but will be looking at it again.

If you want something there and then, it's not going to work for you. If you know that you want something and can wait a couple of days, then it's well worth doing.

For example, I know I'm going out with my family for my birthday in a few weeks, so I've ordered a load of vouchers for the restaurant we'll be going to. When I bought my laptop the other week, I was prepared to wait a couple of days for the 7% discount - I didn't need it immediately, so it would have been daft not to.

And the car hire quotes that I got last week for my summer holiday beat everything I was looking at online as well.
