    Training?

    Asked to do training as part of a contract, and not be paid for the days doing the training - any views on this? And also from an IR35 perspective?

    Any thoughts?

    Depends on the nature of the training, whether perms get paid training time, what your contract says, long term benefit of said training to you, whether you can do it in your own time or does it eat into billable time etc etc how long is a piece of string?

      Way back in the 90's I started a contract and shortly afterwards the ClientCo decided to buy a new piece of software which was pretty new in the market so there were no people with the skills to use it.

      The manager sent me and another permie on a week long course down south, paying for all the flights/hotels/meals/etc. and also signed my timesheets for the week. He knew what he was doing and has taken me on another twice at different ClientCos since then knowing I had the skills he needed

      I always looked to upskill on contracts and, if ClientCo wants to pay for it, so much the better.

        To be fair, the no payment for taking the training thing is the right answer: since you're not charging them for delivering stuff while you're doing the training, you are maintaining the necessary minimal level of MoO. Any other variation risks your IR35 status. You get the knowledge for free, so look on it a s along term investment.

          From an IR35 perspective that's fine and from a training perspective its okay if its useful training, but other than that I'm filing it in pisstake territory.

            I prob wouldn't have an issue with it if it was me as I'd come out the contract with qualifiable experience putting what I had learned on the course into practice. In my view would be something very valuable when the contract ends and looking for the next gig.

              How about the other way round?

              Paying for the course through the business but the client arranging the course letting you claim your day rate...

                Dunno what the course is, but that sounds likely to be significantly more expensive - especially on flate rate VAT.

                    I'd be a little more worried about why you being asked to do this? Has then work you are contracted to do changed to the extent you need more knowledge or is it something new you are being asked to do? Is the manager treating you as part and parcel of the organization so lumping you in etc. All very bad pointers and I would say going on the course is the least of your concerns.
