Finding out agency cut - wish I didnt know now! Never ends well.

Hmmm. Despite being pleased with recent increase the rate is still a little low to be honest.

But having just accidentally found out their charge out rate it seems their still taking over 20%, before it looks like it was approaching 30%. Greedy twats.

Obviously, my last rate increase didn't come from client, they just decided not to be quite so greedy to shut me up.
Cheeky twat agent gave me the sob story about how his margins were cut to the bone and how the client really had to dig deep and restructure budgets just to keep me there.

Grrrr. Wish I didn't know now. Extension starts monday and I've got 4 months knowing I'm lining their pockets :-(

Which will teach you to probe for information on how much the customer is paying for you before you negotiate the extension not after...
Personally i like to get such information as soon as possible.

Its not professional IMHO to ask client this sort of thing though. Its their business at the end of the day.

And I didnt probe I did genuninelly find out by accident and the client showed me something but didnt realise the info was on there.

Actually it is professional for both the client and contractor to know how much the middle man is making.

Why? So the client knows they are getting their money's worth and the contractor doesn't feel exploited.

Exploited workers are more likely to move on.....

Clients often do that on purpose.

I agree with this although if you have an excellent relationship with your client sometimes a bit of dig doesn't do any harm. I've found out the billing rate at every gig I have ever been on in someway or an other. Most usual method used to be on paperwork left at the printer but with follow you printing become prevalent that isn't as common. It's quite easy to find out if you are working on projects though.

As with Salary jealously when you're permanent - I find it a much better strategy to work out if I'm happy or not with what I'm on, as opposed to what others are getting (even if that's due to me).

Just a question. Who do you blame for this situation?

Problem is you hate agents, well in fact everyone, so these types of situations will always end up winding you up as they are usually damned already. You call him a cheeky twat, most would call him a good agent who has pulled the wool over some silly bastards head. He's pulled this off twice and got away with it. Maybe he is good at his job and you are crap at negotiating. Your carrying on without sorting the contract will have told the agent what he needs to know about you and has rightfully had you over a barrel.

Now you have the task of getting over yourself and your hatred of agents and see if you can act professionally and continue to carry out the gig that you agreed to in a calm and professional manner. Either that or let it nark you every day so further solidifying your poor attitude towards clients and agents and potentially completely ruin the gig that you might have been happy in not knowing this...

Your choice old boy..... but I will be expecting the raft of moaning mails over the next few months....
