So, lately I've been interacting with recruiters that wants references up front to guard their reputation. Is this a normal practice?
Say you secure a few interviews and they all call my referees, how do you deal with your ex-manager being hounded by recruiters for reference calls?
Is this a rude thing to do to your ex-manager?

Or am I risking not being put forward for a role because i refuse to give out references up front?

I've had this tried on me. I usually say something like 'my last few roles have required a high level of security clearance which means I'm not at liberty to divulge the names of possible referees...'

Or (and closer to the truth)... 'It was the policy of my previous clients not to give references to contractors'

Personally its not something I worry about. Just don't blink first...if the agent thinks you're a match they'll put you forward.

I mistakenly went ahead and provided references for my current gig (this is my first, so still learning).

Moving forwards I won't be providing any references as I don't want my previous employers being hassled by pimps, very little of the phone call will be referencing checking.. the rest will be the pimp extracting info to find out if there's an 'in' with the reference's company.

My pimp continued to chase for a 2nd reference I simply replied.

"All previous contracts include a nondisclosure clause including employee names and contact details so unfortunately I will be unable to provide references"

Well, in the role I'm about to start just did what I usually do.

Having interviewed, paper work being worked on, gave the agency contact details of the agencies I was contracting through in the last two roles. Not a quibble made. Indeed, agency v quickly amended a few clauses QDos identified ( though contract looked fairly tight even without amendments ). That was for a public sector SC role, so I'd suggest it's down to the agency you go through.
