UK 'proposes customs centres on both sides of border'

As I’ve mentioned before, movement of people is not the issue. Even if half the continental mainland used the bridge from ROI to NI to GB, most checks on the rights of people to live and work in the U.K. have already been outsourced to landlords and employers. -
Only solution that I think would work, would be to 'give' control of NI border to ROI and EU (kind of the same way ROI border control was given to the UK for years). No border of any kind between NI/ROI and physical border control between NI/ROI and the rest of the UK.
Obviously this solution doesn't come without its own issues:
- NI would be like an hybrid place not in or out the EU (not sure how this would work)
- A border between NI and the rest of the UK goes against the 'Unity of the United Kingdom'"The boy who cried Sheep"Comment

Agreed, but still 'Free movement of people' and who goes in and out the country was clearly one of the main points of the leave campaign!Originally posted by meridian View PostAs I’ve mentioned before, movement of people is not the issue. No problem with the UK leaving the EU.Originally posted by original PM View PostOr are we saying that the UK is completely unable to leave the EU because of this issue?
But it has to be done in a way which is compatible with the GFA. The only obvious way to do that is for either NI, or the entire UK, to stay in CU/SM.
The backstop is a total fudge which just kicks the can down the road. Fact is, no-one knows how to fooking solve this.Scoots still says that Apr 2020 didn't mark the start of a new stock bull market.Comment

The real Achilles heal to the e.u. plan is that they need a seamless border between the UK and Ireland to allow Irish goods quick transit to mainland Europe. Otherwise it's a long boat ride around the UK to France or Spain from Dublin. Will Irish/EU goods be subject to customs checks if they are transiting through the UK?Make Mercia Great Again!Comment

Interesting read here.
Brexit’s Irish border problem, explained - Vox
and as far as I can tell the only major issue is the GFA - it is not to do with the actual problems of implementation a border more what some people think a border represents.Comment

Maybe you should have read that BEFORE you posted complete bollux in this thread?Originally posted by original PM View Post

The GFA is the only issue?Originally posted by original PM View Post...as far as I can tell the only major issue is the GFA ...
Would that be the agreement that brought the end to The Troubles, allowing people with opposing political views to live together in peace.
Yeah, let’s scrap that, it won’t create tension or cause any problems...…Maybe we ain’t that young anymoreComment

It still is, it’s just that “FoM” is shorthand for “the Treaty right to live, study, work, retire where you like”, and not actually whether people can travel.Originally posted by CryingSheep View PostAgreed, but still 'Free movement of people' and who goes in and out the country was clearly one of the main points of the leave campaign!
Eg there will still be the freedom of Brits to have “movement” from the U.K. to Spain for a holiday and back again, it’s just that the right to do this under Treaty and to work and retire there is being removed.Comment
