Just a thought Ireland had open borders long before the eu happened why is it such a problem now?
They were both outside the EU and then both joined the EU at the same time. The problem is than the UK is leaving the single market and the customs union. The Common Travel Area for people can be maintained. The problem is with goods.
One consideration is the number of land border crossing points. There are more than there are between the USA and Canada, and along the whole of the EU's eastern border.
What EU does not want is any other member to even think about voting to leave.
This is the strategic, overriding everything else reason why EU won't compromise on its principles.
For its own sake it can't, only an idiot would expect otherwise.
You mean idiots such as those that voted out
We all know it would be better for both the UK and EU if both sides played ball and negotiated the best deal possible, but this would leave the UK is a strong position outside the EU and there is no way the EU top dogs can afford this to happen for the very reasons you said above. Those who think we will get a good deal are delusional as the EU can't risk others thinking about following our lead.
