This too.Originally posted by TestMangler View PostThis ^^^
This is exactly what happened to me and two friends of mine (all around the same time). Two + years of batting stuff back and forward between Abbeytax and HMRC followed by a letter out of the blue saying the investigation was at an end.
people tend to talk about the high profile cases won and lost at commissioners and in the courts. Many, many more investigations (some lasting years) don't get that far.
2.5 years of stress and sleepless nights. Then a month or so before we were due at the commissioners got a letter saying they were dropping the case.
This is why I firmly believe the NTRT guys will have the same thing happen to them.Comment

Pretty stressful though I would imagine having to be on hold like that for years?Originally posted by TestMangler View PostThis ^^^

Just dropping the PCG in to conversation at my current client I would beg to differ quite strongly on bold point. Am not really sure where you get this from either. Most of the Fri/Mon contractors and other guys that don't have a clue about IR35 have bought PCG plus believing it to be the silver bullet to get them out of IR35 and then gone back to being disguised permie thinking they have done their bit.Originally posted by malvolio View PostNot that I know of; I'm sure we would have heard. But people that join PCG tend to have a fairly well developed sense of what they are doing anyway. Certainly their boards get very few RTFMs compared to other sites...
Of course the boards might give you a clue but those are the guys that bother to log in and even bother to post. I bet the numbers that get it and just forget far outweigh them I am afraid.
I personally would rather see PCG tighten up their joining criteria. There are people here who are members who are a liability to contracting.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

True, but they insure themselves rather than members. If they had to vet individuals, their direct costs would go up, and it's not clear whether their insurance costs would come down.Originally posted by northernladuk View PostI personally would rather see PCG tighten up their joining criteria. And a whole bunfight would start as well. Yes totally unworkable... just some wishful thinking.Originally posted by jamesbrown View PostTrue, but they insure themselves rather than members. To add slightly to this conundrum, my renewals are due.. currently I'm a PCG member and I have my PI/PL insurance with Qdos.
Is it worth keeping both or should I put all my eggs in one basket now the Qdos is offering IR35 insurance akin to that of PCG? I think the answer lies within the pricing structure in that the PCG membership costs less than the Qdos IR35 insurance and they have a track record of dealing with these matters...
Guess I need to run a slide rule over this in the next day or two...Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magicComment

Won't take too long. QDOS insure you against an IR35 investigation. So does PCG basic membership, in effect. Neither has lost a case for a very long time now.Originally posted by TraceRacing View PostTo add slightly to this conundrum, my renewals are due.. currently I'm a PCG member and I have my PI/PL insurance with Qdos.

But then PCG Plus insures you against any tax-related investigation (including CT and VAT), plus you get free jury service cover, free agency default cover and half a dozen other things that added up would cost around £1000 on the open market. Plus you're adding numbers to the only organsiation representing the freelance contractor, and while progress is painfully slow we'd be a lot worse off without them.
Bit of a no brainer really. But perhaps I'm a little biased....
