Template letter for responding to HMRC consultation

NTRT have prepared a template letter for people to respond to the consultation. Please alter it in your own words.

Latest News | No To Retrospective Taxation

Some people will say it won't count if everyone sends similar letters but HMRC will have to report to the Minister how many responses they got. So every letter does count.

I feel quite sorry for them. Very sad individuals. Personally I find it hard to keep focused on the real issues here with these distractions. Luckily DR and SC seem to carry on unaffected.

Here is an irony that will be lost on most.

What do you think all these EBT users are going to do now that the writing is on the wall for these schemes?

Go back to PSC of course. But that's not tax avoidance is it?

No-one would ever incorporate to avoid paying tax. Perish the thought.

yep but it will be a rise in the use of PSCs by people who will be easy targets for HMRC because they won't do things correctly. Many on here will feel that more PSCs will be a good thing as it will leave HMRC with more low hanging fruit to pick from so they won't attack "proper" contractors.

There is a real problem here but its not EBTs / BN66 or anything like that.... It is the simple fact that the Contracting market contains a lot of people who want the money they get from being a contractor but don't want the hassle that comes with it of running a business. I'm sure if you asked the people who join these schemes the sales points they bought into will be:-

          1) they were scared of IR35,
          2) they liked the additional money..
          3) they weren't aware of the work required to run a limited company and feared the hassle of doing so....

What we actually need is for a simple method by which people can work freelance.... Until that problem is resolved nothing is going to be fixed....

The Government would say we've already got that - PAYE umbrella.

              Letter sent.

HMRC should be tackling Big Business and the Super Rich who get away with dodging taxes all the time. The amount of money that can be recovered from these people is huge, but the amount of tax they will claw back from this will be tiny in comparison and will probably cost the govt in the long run.

Also don't forget folks... you only have 7 days to make your voice heard.

No its not*. I'm risk adverse+. Hence I use a limited company not a PAYE umbrella because some have gone bankrupt in the past without paying people.....

*If HMRC have actually been foolish enough to say that anywhere I would be very interested as that would give a lot of angles to attack them from...

+ by which I mean I want my money under my control with no one else involved......

It's hard to have total control with most contracts going through agencies but I take your point.

I don't know if HMRC have said this, although it's clear they and the Government would prefer to see all freelancers on PAYE.

That's a terrible argument. It's not "fair" for a wife to find out her husband has been having an affair, or downloading illegal child porn, but life isn't fair and things don't work that way.

Your wife and daughter aren't responsible for whatever money HMRC decide you owe them. Perhaps you should make sure everything is in their names...
