A good reason why this whole retrospective taxation needs to heard at the highest level - some hope that an appeal will be successful...

At least they mentioned some of the positive aspects, and put in some balance from the institute about opening the door to retrospection, but inevitably this had the inflammatory headline. Rather than "Innocent bystanders offered chance to legally arrange affairs rogered by court/hmrc". Gotta to calm down, still rather emotional, sorry.

I don't think we are going to get any symapthy from Joe public. And with that in mind why should the tories do anything to help us.

Seriously it scares me more that people want to settle with HMRC as this will only make them more likely to hunt us all down before we have exhausted all avenues....

I have lost a little of my optimism and will make provisions to get the money together but they will not get it until I have to pay them.

Yes - and as I mentioned we need real advice and guidance from them, not a mailshot every now and then. I personally am a bit fed up with the "we lost that, but never mind, now we are going to do this. Don't worry this is perfectly normal" approach - where and when does it actually matter what happens in this process. Realistically, where are we likely to gain traction, because so far we have lost the written application, now the JR, but apparently thats all fairly normal. I can't take it much longer - what can we actually win?

On another note, if the BBC think its ok to call us offshore tax dodgers, then perhaps we should highlight all the other schemes out there (even I know of several and I am certainly not a tax advisor) and start calculating how many other people, businesses and firms could be caught up in retrospective action. We could have that deficit paid off in no time. Hey lets retrospectively tax child benefit too.. child rearing tax dodgers!

100% with you. I will start to get my house in order. But they will have to go all the way to get a penny from me.

Yes, but as discussed. People need some certainty and control in their lives. I for one am losing my grip on normality rapidly as this goes on. I also need to be able to plan some time into the future concerning my children. This is now dragging on to the extent that they will have grown up and left home before it is resolved, and during all of those formative years I have been stressed over this and unable to look forward to spending money on them as all I ever do is try to save every spare penny in the event of something that "might" happen one day. This is no life, it is to quote others a bag of "tulip"

With you all the way on that. My son is due to start University this year. I'd like to be able to pay for his fees and accomodation £6k ish, but I'm saving everything I've got. It's a croc of merde.

Well, looks like the survey backfired on us and was presented incorrectly.

"Fiftey-seven other scheme users cannot meet the tax demand, even if they were to sell all of their assets including their family home," Mr Huitson's barrister claimed.
"Twenty-nine scheme users could only settle by selling or re-mortgaging their family home," he added.

Surely it should have started with 'Of 200 users asked..'

Now it looks like of the 2500 people, it will only actually effects 90 people seriously!
