so it seems some labour ministers took advantage of the second homes rules to avoid capital gains tax at 18% on properties they had bought, done up and sold. This was done by doing it up as a second home using taxpayers money, then re-designating it as the main home just prior to selling...
This was all ok because it was 'within the rules' ............

and we are tax dodging scum?

I am desperately hoping for some dirt on Timms,

Its a shame the tories won't agree to reverse S.58 when they are in office.... and I do wonder why about that?

Given all that has taken place over the 12 months in this government, it is genuinely scary to think they are a serious players wrt leglisation in this country.

If they think that it will bring them in revenue while not affecting the majority of tax paying voters they won't abandon it. Hopefully you can convince them that it won't be a revenue stream.

They're unlikely to make an announcement or manifesto pledge about a tax policy alteration that will affect only a very small special interest group. If they do plan to repeal S.58 you might hear about it via a private communication.

Attached was the standard treasury letter to him from Stephen Timms, it also thanked me from taking the trouble to raise my concerns about this with them! Nice!
                  Ditto..

Not sure why such a long delay in getting back to us with a standard response.

Only problem with that is that you are firmly on the side of the Daily Mail.
