    SAY NO TO RETROSPECTIVE TAX

      Interest from the Sunday Times

I have contacted them and they might be interested in running a story.

Would anyone who is facing financial ruin be prepared to talk to them on the record? This could mean having your name in the paper.

It might also be worth them speaking to anyone who has experienced procedural mistakes eg. Distraint notices, bailiffs turning up.

There is a risk this could be spun against us but they seem most interested in exposing HMRC heavy handedness, of which we have faced plenty.

PS. they are aware of this forum now.

Mmmmm, I really think going to the papers could be a big mistake. This could easily be spun against us as we have to consider human nature. Trying to get sympathy from the public for paying very little tax (albeit legally) while being paid a half decent income will be very tricky. It's a very emotive issue and I think people will be more annoyed at what they will see as some sort of cheating (even though it isn't), rather than the bigger picture of this governments use of retrospective legislation which has the potential to effect everyone in the country.

Any other paper could get hold of the story and twist it anyway they want and once you've gone down this route, there is no turning back. I think it would be better to let Montp do their stuff first of all and use the papers as a last resort.

DR - have you spoken to Montp about this and what is their view??

          Hi all,

As can be guessed from my title, I have decided to lurk no more!!

Pleased to say that I have only been lurking for 2-3 weeks, having received a link to this forum by obviously another concerned individual. Many thanks by the way - its enlightening to know there are a fair number of others potentially in the same predicament. Not that I wish anyone the potential agony of all this.

I too have received my CNs for 2003 to 2008, which did not make for pleasant reading, and like others thay also arrived just prior to Christmas (so thoughtful those nice people in HMRC). What will be the outcome if I have to pay - ruin!! The total amounts to a very substantial sum, which if it has to be repayed will require the cashing-in of our 'pension-plan' funds and leave us depending on the morsels thrown to us by the government of the day in the form of a state pension. So much for goverment advise to 'save for our future'.

What do I think about HMRC and their games - I cannot print the answer here.

Some of the contributers to the thread should be knighted for their superb information - well done you guys/gals.

Letter to my MP in the post tomorrow - it will be interesting to see what response I get.

                times.....

Probably a little bit late as someone has already opened the can of worms it would appear... but I strongly believe any press coverage will prove an own goal.......

you are drawing the attention of the wrong part of society, which will serve Labours'/ Goverments argument. I cannot advise against this strongly enough.

I agree. Very few people will grasp the central issues of transparency and certainty in tax affairs; they will just see some highly paid consultants trying to avoid paying their 'fair share'. I don't see what we have to gain by bringing the press into it.

disagree, it sounds like the times is sympathetic to our predicament, presented intelligently and in the current climate of worry over personal freedoms being eroded, I cant see it harming us in the least. . I think our story is extremely important and must get out there. any accusation of us being fat cats can very quickly be countered. Incompetence and disgusting behaviour of HMRC must be exposed .
