HMRC tried this tactic with me too. It took THREE 64-8 forms to convince the local office to talk with Montpelier. HMRC's tactics must have consumed several days of their time. They still do not have any more of my money.

Keep going - keep plugging away at them till all of the CN's are under appear and collection postponed. Keep notes of all the mistakes they make - they may come in useful.

The government seem willing to use every loophole they can find to exploit in their favour, be it second homes, nannies as employees, selling the gold reserves, raiding the pensions. Do I not have a right to protect my interests against unfair and unjust legislation? Can laws really be invalidated at a whim? It's shameful.
Ironic, isn't it. The government complain that we are using the laws in ways that they did not intend, and yet that is exactly what they are "guilty" of doing. Looking back, it started the day that Labour got into office. Taking away the tax credit from ISA's/Pensions, IR35, throwing money that is earned by hard working people at bone idle brits - and then calling *them* "hard working". It's been one thing after another. But the money has run out now....

The Mail on Sunday report shows numerous MP’s ( they claim 134) who have found a way of claiming second home living allowances when in reality they live close to London.

Surely this indicates they are clearly abusing the intent of Parliament by claiming the allowance.

I wonder how they would respond to retrospective rule changes and then be faced with up to 7 years of back payments plus interest.
"Don't do as I do - do as I say." - message received loud and clear Mr McNulty.

Second home allowance is only claimable against mortgage interest. According to the Mail on Sunday, McNulty got a mortgage on his parents' home so he could then claim second home status on it!! Nice one Mr M!

And you've got to love a man in his fifties who still can't bear to tear himself away from the parental nest.

He does, of course, I am 110% sure of it, have proof of when he actually used his parents' home. I mean, HMRC can ask any contractor to go through their expense claims with a fine tooth comb to account for personal and business use, down to the penny, so I am CONVINCED they can do the same to him regarding his use of mum and dad's pad. Right?

        Right??

He and his wife earn a combined income of 330k a year, excluding the usual expensing and second home scams MPs like him get up to. His second home scam is estimated to have cost you and me between 60k and 100k since 1997.

But - he broke no rules. Or as they said at Nuremberg, I was only obeying orders.

Honesty and integrity run through him, you can just tell. He's an exemplar to us all, and for this government.

Actually, this is a good reason for registering MP as your agent. At least, you have 2 chances of receiving the CNs given that the cheapskates send them 2nd class.

On a more positive and less cynical note, thanks to all here for posting their thoughts and insights, especially of course DR.

Makes one feel not quite so alone in this battle with the forces of darkness.

Question - do MP get in touch with me to formally notify me that they are appealing?

I rang them a couple of weeks back when I got my CNs and was told they had received copies, but I've had no letter or communication to say they've actually contacted HMRC to appeal the CNs and postpone payment.

The last thing I want is bailiffs knocking on my door because HMRC heard nothing in the 30 day deadline.

                McNulty

He should be careful what he says. After all, it was the neighbours who dobbed Jacqui Smith in for crashing at her sisters pad.

It is ironic that the "letter of the law" applies to them, whereas we have to abide by the "spirit of the law" as defined by them.

Unlike HMRC, they don't mess about. Drop them an email if you want confirmation.

                    Greg Hands (Conservative)

Does anyone, who hasn't written recently, have him as their MP?

If so, email me and I'll send you a letter which highlights the double standards of Ministers in the way they claim expenses vs. the way we've been treated.

No they dont get in touch : as they are very very busy. But appeals are number one priority.
