probably more likely to outlaw JR's or appeals to ECHR !!

They've perservered with IR35 for best part of 10 years, which most parties agree is just bad legislation.
I know this is a bit of wishful thining and probably deluded, but in my heart of hearts I seriously think theres a slim chance the treasury may think this isnt worth the bother anymore. They know they havent done well on this and probably would prefer it to go away, especially considering how little they are likely to recover in the middle of the worst recession since the 30's. Also considering how many bigger fish there are out there to fry (Consider Philip Green (GB's old chum) paying himself a £1.2bn (thats BILLION) divi, tax free courtesy of it being paid to his wife, a recent resident of Monaco)

HMRC's hypochrisy and double standards seem to know no bounds.

      Another one for Darling

My mp (Paul Burstow ..LibDem) ....mailed back yday in repsonse to a tuned DR letter

I talked about about my saving/retirement pot was being swallowed by this retrospective legislation .....it would mean that my son might not be able to go to university and I'd be forced on state pension.

Mr Burstow was concerned about the attack on "ordinary working families" rather than the case that hmrc put in their letter where they stressed that
"the Section would only be used in the worst cases of avoidance".

He has forwarded my letter (with a covering letter) on to the Black eyebrowed one .....

We can always hope it would go away! But I think this is a spiteful campaign against us by Labour and HMRC.

The govt. are jealous that we dont fall in line with the rank and file who hold an average job, on an average income and pay half of their money in tax.

They are also in the pocket of big business and have been lobbied by the big consultancies to make life very difficult for us.

          de-cloaking

ok - I knew they were coming but was surprised at how angry I was last night when my 'CNs' hit the doormat.
I have 'adjustments' now for years with MTM, ending 2006 (I joined part way thru) and 2007.
Being very disorganised, I'm late with my 2008 return ! - has anyone received adjustments on these returns yet ?

I'm looking at the fat-end of a 5-figure sum, would probably have to re-mortgage to pay, unless I can start saving agressively now.
So, there goes my fund for my son's education and my 'cushion' for when I'm between contracts - not that that will get much sympathy.

Much calmer this morning though. Absolutely no way I'm going to roll-over on this one, I'm in for the long-haul fight.

          A bit of advice required:
I currently have some cash wich is offsetting my mortgage (albeit at only 1.09%) now.
Should I leave my money here or buy a tax-voucher ? What rate of interest are they charging ?

          Thanks guys

If you haven't written to your MP, email me.

            HMRC are currently charging 2.5%:
            http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/interest-late.htm

Since it is "simple interest" (not compound) it actually works out at less than this.

            Example
Suppose you currently owe £50k in tax + £10k in interest. They are charging 2.5% on the £50k = £1250 p.a. On the total liability of £60k, this works out at 2.08%.

Why would a bunch of people already raking it in be jealous of low lifes like us?

Our problem is perhaps we didn't avoid enough tax a la Philip Green's 1.2 billion dividend payment, tax free, paid to his wife who fortuitously lives in France, sorry, Monaco.

The govt's hypocrisy knows no bounds, from the Home Secretary claiming a room in her sister's house costs 20k a year to rent, to the third of MPs employing relatives at public expense, to the 180k a year they claim with next to no receipts....

Would love to know how many MPs and ministers had money offshore before such behaviour was (relatively recently) banned in the Ministerial Code of Conduct. In the hundreds, I'd wager.

The same b*stards who are dragging their feet when it comes to recompensing Equitable Life pensioners. Failing banks, run by jumped up accountants and salesmen mostly with not the slightest formal qualification to run a bank? Throw money at them. Pensioners' honestly-earned savings going down the pan because a mismanaged company wasn't spotted by govt regulators? Let 'em drown.

Guess I won't be voting Labour or Tory next time round. I'll be checking out, how can I put it, the minority parties.

This case will seriously undermine the governments attacks on tax avoidance - it only takes one BIG slip up to taint the water.
There's an elephant wondering around here...

Hello Guys, a bit of advise/morale boosting please.

A couple of months ago I received a notice of assessment for the 2001/2002 period, I sent this over to MontP and received a confirmation email from them that this had been appealed.

Today I have received revised SA for the 2001/2002 (5 figures) and so I called the tax office to make sure that they had notification of the appeal. A 'charming lady' informed me that they no history of the appeal notice and that I should payup now. After laughing and slamming the phone down on her (difficult with a mobile) I am now left wondering what to do next.

I will of course send the SA over to MontP and I have emailed them regarding the appeal but is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks in advance for any help, after 7 years I'm getting a bit fed up with the whole thing to be honest and the other half is none too pleased.

Anyhow I wont go down without a fight (physical if need be), and thanks for the forum entries as it's great to know that I'm not the only one putting up with this sh!te.

                    letter campaign - step up

I was wondering, its obvious from the petition poll we seem to have a bit of support from non-members with regard to retrospective legislation in general, many willing to sign the petition.

Wonder of any of them would be interested in sending a suitably drafted letter to their MP's.

I'm reminded of the scene in Shawshank where Andy Dufrain is trying to get his library off the ground. He sends a letter every week to the funding board asking for money and in the end they sent him $200 to shut him up. After that he starts sending 2 letters a week.
