Jesus feck. That's appalling. Dont know whether to wait until I get one before buying the CTD or not. (Not certain what my 'exposure' is)

Are you sure you will get one? Can you ask montp what your exposure is?

I reckon they've calculated them already and MrYouKnowWho () is saving them all up in a box next to his desk ready to post out on Dec 22 to arrive just in time for Xmas Day!

Seriously though, why don't you ask MP to calculate what your exposure is?...thats what I did and their calc was very close to the figure I calculated and VERY close to the estimate I received from HMRC a few years back...I then took out a CTD a couple of weeks ago (when HBOS were starting to look a little shaky!)...

...having said that, the money went out for the CTD nearly 2 weeks ago (as did the accompanying letter) and I'm still waiting to hear confirmation that they've received it...might have to follow that one up...

I reckon the same - just to piss everyones Christmas off. I remember them doing this with my first letter of investigation many years back

I would chase them up - I got a letter of confirmation within the first week and a week later I got the printed cert.

Bolshie - Definitely get MP to calc - I did and bought my CTD from that. You might as well to stop interest acruing if that is your intent anyway.

Well I am not expecting a closure notice! But then I only joined April 2006. I know someone in since the beginning who has never heard ANYTHING from HMRC. **IF** gov win bn66 then HMRC will start chasing - and I guess will trawl through records.

Believe it or not HMRC can be very inefficient. I have given a couple of stories from my ex-wife before. They do try their best but it tends to attract those (like my ex) who think power is an end in itself!

Personally I think I still owe £1400 from 1990 - I think in those days there was a higher rate assessment? It was never sent and I was not going to chase them up to do their job!

Can you PM me when you have emailed and who you emailed please? I might be able to help...

                bad news folks

I have just asked MontP when interst woudl begin to accrue on any tax from 07-08 as the CTDs we have been buying are up to 06/07 - I was assuming it owuld be January 09 .... but alas the following answer came back ......

If HMRC are successful in their challenge they will rework all the tax calculations including the payments on account so interest on some of the tax for 2007/2008 will have been accruing since 31 January 2008 and 31 July 2008.

so its seems to stop interst accruing on a tax form that doe not need o be filed for another 4 weeks we also need to put that amount on a CTD as well !!!!

Quite possibly. Final payment for y/e April 07 was 31/1/08. Thus this is clearly late.

For the y/e/ April 08 the first payment on account was due on 31/07/08 - even though the return isn't due to Jan 09.

Thus you need to be holding a CTD for the CURRENT year to the value of the payment on account which would normally be half the unpaid tax. It's the same as anybody else in a dispute. [I do accept that it's a bit mean charging interest in a current year dispute after the payment on account was due, but if they didn't everybody could simply appeal the payment on account to nil and not face consequence of doing this incorrectly]

                    06/07 Enquiry

I seem to remember getting a letter from the SCO informing me that they were enquiring in to my 2005/2006 tax return about April last year.

I was wondering if anyone had received notification of an enquiry in to the 2006/2007 return.

In my case, HMRC took a fine toothed comb to all my expenses claimed through my last limited company in addition to the Montp enquiry. And it was a right royal pain in the arse.
