    Snacks, fruit and free lunches...

    Looking at some of the permie roles in my field the perks listed above are pretty standard. Got me thinking, if companies can do that then surely an outside contractor could in theory?

    Strictly speaking, I'm not working from home either. I lease out a co-working space.

    So can I lay it on for myself without facing the wraith of my accountant or worse...HMRC?

    Amazingly you can but there are some conditions. Look up the HMRC guidance over “subsidised meals”. As long as you have a dedicated place of business, are an employee, and all employees can avail themselves of the meal provision, you are likely to qualify. You may argue that snacks and fruit are not “meals” but luckily “light refreshments” are covered.

        No. Nor does being a director of the company in question. Plus I strongly doubt they are an employee of the company anyway, as opposed to a substantive office holder.
