I would imagine that there is a case of heightened sensitivity after the "Panama Papers" were leaked, especially for anyone in financial services. Banks are also very precious about their methodologies, which gives them competitive advantage.

Bear in mind that the emails were sent, shock horror, to an email address, not a particular device. They will have no clue, without considerable cost, as to where the communications have been stored and read after they have left the company's cyber-estate. For all they know, you could have something set up which automatically catches the emails, forwards them on, posts them to a public FTP site, RIVAL BANK or anything.

Unfortunately you've left yourself wide open here and the recommendation that has been made throughout this thread still stands:
    SEEK LEGAL ADVICE IMMEDIATELY
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist

You need a lawyer before you meet them. Ideally, you should say nothing and your lawyer does all the talking.

If you really are going to meet without a lawyer, then be very sure you have done nothing with the file. Apologize a lot.

Are you tempted to do that without a solicitor?

If so, you might get asked all the same questions you have been asked here plus a lot more.

They might want a meeting just to give you a slapped wrist.

Or they might be on a fishing trip - anything you say could make matters worse.

What about PC's other questions; arguably some are more important. Critical is what exactly you sent via email.

Not one bit of advice been taken. Still asking vague questions to keep the thread going. Troll.

                but it's not "protected data".

This is a breach of contract issue

                nothing more

(Disclaimer: this is not to worry OP, the UK is not as nuts as the US.)

This thread reminds me of the story of a guy in the US who deposited code he'd written for a client in an encrypted place on the cloud, just before he left. No particular reason, he just wanted to keep a record of code he had written. He went to a competitor firm, and the one he left got him convicted of criminal charges and sentenced to 8 years. After serving some time he appealed and got the conviction reversed.

Located the article where I read it, it's the Vanity Fair link below.
