Out of interest, why is it that that VAT man is the harshest of them all? Is it quite simply because the VAT process and calculation is the most glaringly obvious?

In the days of Pre HMRC VAT was Customs & Excise and Corp Tax was Inland Revenue, only one of those two people had the power to ask you to spread your legs while they donned a latex glove

Oddly enough it's very easy. You don't do anything and hey presto.

Regardless of personal situation. This should never happen. Its not personal money so don't treat it as such.

Sounds like everything was withdrawn including the kitchen sink.
