Surely they can't enforce penalties if they have no official record that you received it.
I didn't know if they'd send the APNs by recorded delivery. Anyway I'm retired with plenty of time so I thought I'd ring HMRC out of interest. Today I played golf and I have to say that was much more interesting than talking to HMRC.

      Hi all,

Has anyone contacted hmrc yet to discuss options if they can't pay the APN? I can't pay but have been holding off contacting them untill I have an idea of what I can pay.

      -Has anyone agreed payment terms

-Do you still get hit with penalties if you have agreed terms?

      Thanks

          APNs again

Are they issuing APNs for pre April 2004 contracts?

Just noticed a funny line on my APN.....

Just re read my APN and it says
            -----------
            Under section:-
Working with us to settle your tax affairs
Although you have already told us that you want to settle your tax affairs, you will still need to pay the accelerated payment by the date shown in the notice.

            ----------------

I have not told them I want to settle my tax affairs....... so where does this come from??????

              It's probably supposed to read:
"Although you may have already told us that you want to settle your tax affairs, ..."

It's a type of subliminal hypnotic statement to make you feel like.....you really want to settle your tax affairs, y'know?
I guess HMRC's 2015 edition of their "behaviour management guidebook" recommends this.
Don't you feel like you want to settle?

I have no way of paying so thought I would get in touch with them.

The APN warning letter says contact them straight away if you will have difficulty. I contacted them and the response was "We can't help until the APN has been issued, call back then".

The APN came and says if you will have difficulty paying contact us straight away. I contacted them and the response was "Please make a payment to reduce the amount you will be liable for after the 90 days" I said I was ringing as I have no way of paying as per the APN. The response "Don't you have any asset you can sell off" When I said no they said there was nothing they can do and I should talk to the HMRC debt management team. However, they then said Debt Management won't be interested until the debt is overdue.

So, the request to contact them on the APN letters is lip service and nothing more. As usual trying to make themselves look good to the outside world so they can say they offered to help.

Seems their view is do nothing to help people and let the guys with the big boots who are known for not being very sympathetic deal with it.

A few choice words went though my head, but as usual we can take from this that they don't give a sh*t.

We didn't end the week on the high I was expecting. Nothing from Montpelier or NTRT. I'm sure the wheels are in motion with some better times to come.

Sure everything is fine. They didn't say we would definitely get anything this week.
