The basis for not paying expenses via umbrella

    Hi all

I've asked my umbrella company this but I'm still not understanding the answer.

I understand that from April 2016, new tests for expenses came about (SDC, etc) and umbrella won't pay most expenses. I have had mileage paid in the last year or so as that is exempted, but other expenses like train or food aren't being paid by the umbrella. They say that I have to claim from HMRC.

Anyone know why that would be? Is that in law?

    Thanks

Yes, you can claim expenses from HMRC.

thanks Cojak, and I expect that's what I will have to do.

But I'm just trying to get to an answer where the umbrellas have got this from. They mentioned it's due to the salary sacrifice rules, but does anyone know where this is actually stated, as they didn't?

Short answer - the only expenses an umbrella can pay you are ones paid and signed off by the agency through which you are working or the end client - i.e. the only expenses you can claim are the expenses that a regular employee would be able to claim and receive...
