This is why I backup to another RAID every night. Mind you I'm only backing up about 350Gig across all the machines.

OK, just to twist the knife a little, why were you returning the drive to the supplier? You didn't have a spare on-hand? You didn't immediately buy a replacement when the first one died? You basically lost everything through trying to save £80.

I don't understand people who only backup locally, with all the cheap cloud storage you should back up to one of those. I use googe drive 100GB is just over a quid a month, terabyte is 6 quid a month.

Maybe the disk isn't dead, possibly just the board is dead which means you can still get your data, just need to buy a new board and you should be ok

Security (or fear of lack thereof) innit.

With a 1Mbps upload - it would take several days to backup a significant amount of data. I do know two companies that will come on site, take a copy on a disk and use that as the initial upload. Thereafter its just changes.

Quite a few will do that but it tends to cost a bit.

The cloud is OK for backing up essentials but I wouldn't want to put terabytes of stuff up there unless I had gigabit connection speeds or similar. It will come in time.

And I don't understand why people put so much trust in Google.

Or any other Yank company come to that.
