    Sat Nav replacement recommendations

Well the new contract is going well, the only problem is the traveling.

I have to get around the Leeds-Bradford conurbation and it driving my old Navman mental. It's taking me off the ring road routes and down little residential streets. And as for the traffic jams on a Monday morning...

So I'm after recommendations please. I've looked at a couple of Garmins (the Nuvi 2445 particularly) but reviews suggest that they are unreliable and have a tendency to be too late telling you about lane switching and which roundabout exit to use, and as I have zero navigational skills I find the thought of that quite alarming.

So what do the experts here use?

Have always used tomtom and never experienced these sorts of problems. Expensive to keep up to date though and the tomtom home software is a bit pants.

Experts use local knowledge?! I assume you are coming up the M1 rather than the A1? Basically you are fecked as the A650 through Shipley is a nightmare and there is no real alternative

If I could find the A650 that would be an improvement...

tomtom on a mobile as I'm a bit of a cheapstake.

My parents use it on their full size ipad as the big screen in useful if your sight is not what it was.

The join the A650 at junction 27 of the M62 and it will it will take you straight to your office (unfortunately you will certainly get stuck in traffic through Tong and Shipley at least)

I have been using tomtom iPhone with their traffic HD subscription service. I find it quite good. Plus, you do not have to pay yearly for maps, which you would do if you bought a standalone GPS. Used it both on iPhone 4 and 5.

                iPhone + Google Maps.

Sort out your route on google maps on the PC first, that way you can tailor the suggested route as you see fit. Email the map to yourself as a link. Click the link on your phone to open it in google maps, off you go.

Full nav service with turn by turn voice commands. Bluetooth enabled if your car stereo supports it. The only time it has a problem is if you hit a patch of dodgy phone coverage, then it can struggle to keep up. Shouldn't be a problem in Leeds.

                And it's free.

I thought of that Dave, but I only have a 512mb monthly data allowance and I worry that Google maps can eat that big time.

I usually write my route on a bit of paper and stick it to the back of the sun visor so I can easily check it when I want to. Aside from a short detour around strasbourg (I missed a turn because of roadworks) this technique has served me well over the years. As opposed to GPS units which seem to get me lost every time I switch one on.
